FANTASTIC Customer Service, Great Device

I got this router to go with our new satellite service. After the dish and modem were in place, I went to hook up the router. Things went well until I got to the step "power on the router". It didn't power on. After a second try, I called tech support.

I quickly reached "Angel". Not having to go through a long phone tree and not having to wait very long was the first pleasent surprise. Angel told me to use a paper clip and press the hidden "reset" button for two minutes. After that, the router lit up. At this point I assumed the call would end...problem solved. But, no, Angel stayed on the line, walking me through provisioning the router, and then made sure that my desktop could reach the internet, and then kept on going to make certain my laptop also was set.

So customer service gets a HUGE A+ from me.

And how does the router work? Invisibly, just like it's supposed to. No hic-ups, no glitches, full speed ahead. All our computers (three: my wife has a desktop which I got running on my own) are now in the 21st Century, thanks to NetGear and Angel.

Easy to set-up, worth it so far!

I bought this router for my parents so that they could use their new iPad 2. It was very simple to setup, and I got it working in less than 5 minutes. Right out of the box I plugged it into the cable modem, plugged in the AC adapter, and loaded the CD that came with the router. I followed the simple instructions, and viola, the iPad was connected to the internet in no time. The range is solid, and could probably be better if I put it in a better place (right now its on just a shelf that is kinda low), but they get 2 bars in their living room which is 70 feet away and 3 walls.

I only set it up yesterday, but so far so good. Its not being used as a repeater or range booster, so I can't comment on the use of that. But for what my parents use it for, it perfectly suits their needs.

Perfectly fine, but impossible to get rated speeds

I used the previous version of this router, and I was perfectly fine with the setup and features. Like most wireless routers, it has huge numbers of features for setting up firewall rules, etc., and the UPnP seemed to work fine with my devices like the XBox360. However, something I didn't really consider until I started measuring actual network throughput is that the Ethernet connections on this are 10/100 only. There's no point in having a wireless link that can go "up to 150 Mbps" if the connection to the internet and the other machines on your network can't go faster than 100 Mbps. And on a 10/100 Ethernet link, it's rare to really get 100Mbps anyway, with the result that most of the time my actual connection speeds were in the 55-70Mbps range; only a bit higher than I was getting with Wireless G. Once I switched to a router with gigabit Ethernet ports, my throughput went way up, and I get 95-120 Mbps speeds.

Most Internet services, even FIOS and Cable, have speeds no higher than 20-30 Mbps, so if you really just want wireless access to the Internet, this device is fine. If you want to move files to/from a home server or desktop, or stream video to a laptop or other device, you should spring for the extra money to buy a wireless router with gigabit ports.
